SR-22 in Texas, Explained

What an SR-22 is, who needs one in Texas, how long you need it, and how to keep your premium down.

Published September 15, 2026 by the Yeti Insurance Agency team

If a court or the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) has told you that you need an "SR-22," it can feel confusing and stressful. Here's what it means and how to handle it.

What is an SR-22?

An SR-22 isn't a type of insurance. It's a certificate your insurance company files with the state to prove you carry at least the Texas minimum liability coverage (30/60/25). The state requires it after certain violations to make sure you stay insured.

Who needs an SR-22 in Texas?

Common reasons include:

  • A DWI or drug-related driving conviction
  • A conviction for Driving While License Invalid
  • A second or later conviction for driving without insurance
  • A license suspension after a crash while uninsured, or an unpaid judgment from a crash

The court or DPS will tell you if you need one. If you don't own a car but still need to reinstate your license, you may need a non-owner SR-22 policy.

How long do you need it?

In Texas, you must keep an SR-22 on file for two years from the date of your most recent qualifying conviction (or the date of a judgment against you). A new conviction can extend that period. Confirm the requirement with DPS or the court.

Important: If your policy lapses or is cancelled while an SR-22 is required, your insurer must notify the state, and your license can be suspended again. Set up automatic payments so you never miss one.

How to keep your premium down

  • Compare carriers. Not every insurer accepts SR-22 drivers, and pricing varies widely. An independent agency can quote several at once.
  • Maintain continuous coverage. A clean record over time is the best way to bring rates back down.
  • Consider a higher deductible on collision and comprehensive.
  • Ask about discounts such as defensive driving courses, bundling and paid-in-full.
